At plein '40-'45 the originally vast, open public space has over time been filled in with commercial property consisting of a shopping centre, residential buildings, municipal offices and a parking garage
Central to this public square is the market. Market stalls are uncomplicated, practical and functional. They provide a framework for the workers and visitors where the spatial quality is shaped by the people and the commodities.
Much of the "lost" property could be reclaimed by building simple stairs and ramps creating access to currently unused roof space
The oversized market stall trestles form a perimeter around the plein, clearly framing the public space, while the stairs open new spaces and make movement possible outside of the shopping centres' opening hours.
